DiscoverDEM
DiscoverDEM is a collaboration between Arizona State University's School of Geographical Sciences & Urban Planning and the Ira A. Fulton School of Engineering’s Team Friendship to create a user friendly tool to introduce the importance of digital elevation models and their variety of uses. Digital Elevation Models are 3D representations of a terrain's surface generated by terrain elevation data, also known as height maps.
Uses for a DEM:
- Archaeology - In a combination of using remote controlled drones, archaeologists used DEM models to speed up dig site land surveys
- Flight Simulation - Creating a life-like representation of regions throughout the world for aircraft pilots to practice their skills
- Global Positioning Systems (GPS) - Precision position tracking in difficult and elevated terrain
- Precision Farming - The practice of using DEM technology to implement efficient farm managing tools using yield maps
- Google Earth - A 3D simulation of the Earth that allows users to explore the globe
